Award Templates
An award template is the blueprint for a type of event. It defines:
- Which awards are presented (and in what order)
- Whether each award has a fixed number of recipients or is an open pool
- Which script pages appear between awards during the ceremony
- Whether judges can create one-off awards at the event
Events are linked to a template. Changing the template affects all events that use it, up until event day. On event day, the board always reflects the current template — you do not need to recreate awards each time you run an event.
Access this page from Region Management → Awards → Award Templates.
Creating a template
- Click Add Template.
- Give the template a name (e.g., “FLL Challenge Qualifier — Standard”).
- Save the empty template, then add entries (see below).
Alternatively, use Copy Template on an existing template to start from a duplicate (see Copying a template).
Template entries
Each entry in a template represents one award (or award pool) that will appear on the awards board for events using this template.
Fixed entries
A fixed entry presents the award to a specific number of recipients in ranked order.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Award Type | The type of award being presented. |
| Mode | Set to Fixed. |
| Number of recipients | How many places this award has (e.g., 1 for a first-place-only award, 3 for a top-three award). |
| Presentation order | Controls where this award appears in the ceremony sequence. Drag rows to reorder. |
Use fixed entries for awards like “1st Place Robot Design” or “Champion’s Award”.
Pool entries
A pool entry presents the award to any number of teams — the number of recipients is not fixed in advance. On the awards board, a pool entry appears as a menu from which judges can assign the award to as many teams as appropriate.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Award Type | The type of award being presented. |
| Mode | Set to Pool. |
| Presentation order | Controls where this award appears in the ceremony sequence. |
Use pool entries for Explore-style or recognition awards where every participating team may receive one. There is no limit on how many teams can receive a pool award.
Adding script pages to the ceremony
You can insert ceremony script pages between awards to create introductions, transitions, or closing remarks. In the template’s entry list, click Add Script Page and select the page you want to insert. Drag it into position within the presentation order.
See Script Pages to create and manage the pages themselves.
Allowing free-response awards
When you enable Allow free-response awards on a template, judge advisors at events using this template can create one-off awards during deliberations — awards that are not part of the standard template at all.
A free-response award has a name and an optional script, created fresh for that event. It never becomes part of the template or the award type catalog. Use this for special recognition that comes up spontaneously (“Outstanding Sportsmanship — [Team Name]”).
This option is off by default. Turn it on for templates where organizers need flexibility.
Reordering entries
Drag entries up or down in the template list to set presentation order. The order in the template determines how awards are sequenced in the ceremony script and on the public results page.
Copying a template
To create a new template based on an existing one:
- Click Copy Template on any existing template.
- Give the copy a new name.
- Save.
The copy starts with the same entries, modes, script page placements, and settings as the original. It is fully independent — changes to the copy do not affect the original, and vice versa.
This is the recommended way to set up templates for a new season.
Deleting a template
Templates can be deleted as long as no events reference them. If a template is in use by one or more events, remove it from those events first.
